“DRM-free” is one of the most useful labels to understand when buying ebooks outside a closed reading ecosystem. It can give readers more flexibility—but it does not automatically mean every file works on every device.
What is ebook DRM?
Digital rights management (DRM) is technology publishers and retailers can use to control how a purchased ebook file is opened or transferred. Protected books may require a particular account, app or authorised reading system.
What DRM-free means
A DRM-free ebook does not carry that type of access restriction. You still buy a licensed copy rather than ownership of the underlying copyright, and normal copyright rules continue to apply.
Why readers care
- Greater choice of compatible reading software.
- Easier personal backup and device migration.
- Less dependence on one retailer’s proprietary reading system.
- Potentially easier use of compatible EPUB files with services such as Send to Kindle.
DRM-free does not mean universally compatible
File format still matters. An EPUB, PDF and other ebook formats behave differently, and the reading device must support the file directly or through an appropriate conversion/delivery workflow.
Where eBooks.com fits
eBooks.com sells both protected and DRM-free titles depending on the publisher. That makes the format and DRM information on each book particularly important to check before purchase.
Before buying any ebook
- Check the file format.
- Check whether DRM is present.
- Confirm your device or app is compatible.
- Then compare retailer availability and price.
