You have a little time to read, a phone or Kindle within reach, and one question: how do you get a good book onto it without making the evening feel like a technology project?

Yes, downloading books can be easy. Start with the book you want. A new release, a free classic, a library loan and an EPUB from an author’s website each have a slightly different route. Once you choose the right one, the next steps are much simpler.

Four ebook download routes: Amazon Kindle Store, Project Gutenberg, Libby and Send to Kindle.
Pick your reading route first; you do not need four different apps.

1. For a book you want now: use the Kindle Store

If your heart is set on a particular title, buying the Kindle edition is often the most straightforward route. Open Amazon in your web browser, sign into the account you use for reading, and search for the book. Check the author, edition and format before paying: a paperback listing is a different purchase.

After buying, open your Kindle device or Kindle app with that same account. Connect to the internet, sync the library and select the book to download. Let it finish, then open a few pages before you leave Wi-Fi behind. You can use a compatible phone or tablet with the Kindle app; a dedicated Kindle is optional.

Ready to choose? Browse Kindle ebooks on Amazon. If you know your next read, search the exact title rather than scrolling through everything.

These shopping links start on Amazon.com. International readers may be redirected through Amazon OneLink; check your marketplace and the offer shown to your account before buying.

2. For a free classic: start with Project Gutenberg

A free classic can be a lovely way to test your reading setup. Pride and Prejudice offers family drama and sharp conversation; Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland is a playful alternative when you want something stranger.

Open the book’s Project Gutenberg page and choose the EPUB download. On a phone or tablet, open it in a compatible EPUB reading app. For Kindle, use the Send to Kindle steps below. Start with one book and get it working before building an enormous digital shelf.

Project Gutenberg’s copyright checks are based on US law. If you are elsewhere, check that the edition is available for use in your country. For newer books, try your library or the publisher’s store rather than expecting every title to have a free download.

3. For a library loan: try Libby

Your library card may already be your best book-download tool. If your library uses Libby, install the mobile app, add your library and sign in with your card. Browse, borrow an available title, then download it on Wi-Fi. If the book is on loan, place a hold and try another while you wait.

For US libraries: most Libby ebooks can be sent to Kindle. Open Shelf → Loans → Read With → Kindle, then follow the Amazon sign-in and Get Library Book steps.

For UK and other readers: Libby’s Kindle option is limited to US libraries. Use your library’s supported app or reading device. In the Libby mobile app, the downloaded status icon confirms offline availability; the Libby website itself needs internet.

Library downloads are loans. Keep an eye on the return date, especially when you are halfway through a mystery. Find your library in Libby.

4. Already have an EPUB? Send it to Kindle

Perhaps an author has sent you a reader bonus, or you have downloaded a classic. For a compatible DRM-free EPUB, Amazon’s Send to Kindle page is a convenient route into your Kindle library.

Four steps to add an EPUB: save the file, upload to Send to Kindle, add it to the library, then sync and download.
A simplified workflow, rather than a screenshot of Amazon’s interface.

Save the file to your phone or computer. Sign into Send to Kindle with your reading account, upload the EPUB and keep Add to your library enabled. Send it, allow processing time, then sync your Kindle device or app and download the document. Amazon currently supports web uploads up to 200 MB.

EPUB support here means Amazon processes the file for Kindle reading. It does not mean every EPUB can simply be copied onto every Kindle with a cable. If a shop supplies a protected file for a particular app, use that shop’s supported reading method. If the file fails, check its format and try a fresh download from the original source.

5. Read frequently? Compare the subscription shelf

If you enjoy choosing something new regularly, explore Kindle Unlimited on Amazon. It lets subscribers borrow eligible titles and download them for reading, but its catalogue is not every Kindle book. Any trial, price and renewal terms depend on the offer shown to your account; borrowed titles depend on membership access.

Already have Prime? Browse Prime Reading before adding another subscription. Our Prime Reading vs Kindle Unlimited guide for US and UK readers helps you compare the options. Choose three books you actually want and see which shelf has them.

Before your next journey, do this little check

Offline reading checklist: download fully on Wi-Fi, open the book, test without a connection and check loan dates.
Save this checklist before a flight, commute or weekend away.

Download your chosen book fully, open it once, and test it without an internet connection. A book cover appearing in a library is not always proof that the whole book is ready offline. Pack one backup read too: your future self may be in a different mood.

A few questions readers often ask

Do I need a Kindle? No. Try a compatible reading app on the phone or tablet you already own. If you later prefer a dedicated e-reader, compare Kindle readers on Amazon.

Why is my Kindle book missing? Check the reading account, internet connection, sync status and library filters. Amazon also recommends checking whether a new purchase is complete. Its Kindle library troubleshooting guide walks through these checks.

EPUB or PDF? For ordinary novels, EPUB is often the easier reading choice because text can adapt to the display. A PDF preserves a page layout, which may need zooming on a small screen. Pick the format that suits both the content and your reading app.

Your next book can start tonight

Pick one route and one book. Download it, open it, and settle into the first chapter. You can explore the other options when your reading list changes.
