How to Read Kindle Books for Free: Purchases, Apps and Trials

With e-commerce portals such as Lazada and Qoo10, you can now easily get a Kindle Device.

But books in Amazon costs money, so can we still do the ultimate way and read for FREE?

Glad that you asked! Good that you have been following us and bookmarked us for future updates to know this today.

Quick answer: Some Kindle ebooks have a zero purchase price; others are borrowed through a paid membership or an eligible trial. These are different routes. You do not need Kindle Unlimited or a dedicated Kindle device to buy a free Kindle ebook. Check the Kindle edition’s checkout price while signed in before ordering.

Updated 6 October 2026. As an Amazon Associate, BooksAvenue earns from qualifying purchases. Amazon shopping links on this page are affiliate links.

Step 1: Start with your Amazon reading account. Sign in to the account used by your Kindle library. You can also check the current Kindle Unlimited offer separately if your account is eligible; a membership is not needed for a zero-price purchase.

Step 2: Choose how you will read. Start with the free Kindle app if you already have a compatible phone or tablet. A dedicated Kindle e-reader is an optional upgrade. Our budget Kindle buying guide helps you compare choices before spending.

No Kindle?

If you have NOT purchased the Kindle device, you can download the free Kindle Reading App from iTunes or Google Play Store. The free books work with both the Kindle device and the reading app.

A free Kindle app and an Amazon account are enough to read eligible zero-price purchases. Kindle Unlimited borrowing is a separate membership decision. For Singapore readers, see our Kindle Unlimited availability guide before considering an offer.

Step 3:

After creating an account, go to Departments > Books & Audible > Kindle eBooks.

Then search for “free Kindle books”. You will then see a list of books that say “Kindle Edition” $0.00. You don’t need to be a Prime. All with a reading app, or a physical Kindle

BONUS:

Now an extra step, this has been my ultimate secret for a few years now and every day I have been browsing it constantly for the latest free books.

Freebook sifter is the answer!

Its is a web application where it scans the entire Amazon catalog and displays the link to the free books on its web site. It sorts the books into 30 different categories such as Parenting, Investing and Friction. It also proudly displays the number of free books you can actually download.

So there you go, an Amazon with free books.

Now if you would like to read PAID books for FREE, there is another way too.

Kindle Unlimited Membership Plans are available with 6, 12 and 24-month membership plans.

An eligible trial can be another way to sample included books. Check the current duration, renewal charge and cancellation date displayed to your account. Borrowed membership titles are different from purchased ebooks and access depends on the membership. For US and UK readers, our Prime Reading versus Kindle Unlimited guide explains the differences.

There will be:

  • Unlimited reading from over 1 million ebooks
  • Unlimited listening to thousands of audiobooks
  • Read on any device
  • Membership plans are also giftable

Hi, can I use a SG credit card to join the KU free 30 trial? Want to ask this before I happily filled in my info and get my account suspended, (again) when they detect i am using a non-US credit card. i had that bad experience before after trying to purchase an ebook from Amazon few years back. I can’t use giftcard credit to sign up KU, only credit card.

i have been using gift card to buy books. And top it with SG credit card.

why not you try an international credit card with multi currency choice? Perhaps that should bypass the KU free 30 days trial?

      Try this card: https://bit.ly/2Sdi4IN
The referral link gives u a free physical card too. Only by invites to have access to the physical card.

oh.. for european friends, u can do a N26 bank account too. i think that should bypass the location issues too on Kindle Unlimited.

Been looking around this week. I think the best is still TransferWise. There is a credit card and the bank is based in US.

I am still waiting for the card. Will update again.

Meanwhile if you are signing up, try my referral code for first few fee waiver for you: https://bit.ly/35bIEr1

      Hope this is useful Prishaha74.
