Updated 21 October 2026 · BooksAvenue · Good books. Better reading decisions.
Affiliate disclosure: BooksAvenue may earn a commission through the shopping links marked “affiliate link”, at no extra cost to you. Prices, delivery and title availability depend on your country and the retailer.
The best alternative to Amazon depends on what you are buying. A used paperback, a gift for a US reader and an ebook for a Kobo call for different checks. These five options cover print and digital reading. They are starting points to compare, rather than a ranking of the cheapest store.
1. Bookshop.org: print shopping for US and UK readers
Consider Bookshop.org when you want a retailer built around independent bookshops. Choose the appropriate country storefront: the US store ships print orders within the US and the UK store within the UK. Do not assume a US listing or our US affiliate link will work for an overseas delivery.
Compare the exact edition, binding and checkout total. 🏪 Example: Pride and Prejudice at Bookshop.org US — affiliate link. This example leads to a specific edition; it does not establish availability for a different edition or country. The UK storefront is a separate, non-affiliate information link here.
2. Alibris: comparing new and used print copies
Alibris is useful when condition and edition matter as much as the title. Compare seller descriptions carefully: a low-priced copy may have highlighting, wear or different accompanying material. For a gift, check the condition description instead of assuming every listing is new.
Shipping depends on the item, seller and destination. Compare the delivered total before combining offers from different sellers. 📚 Browse Alibris — affiliate link. See its shipping guidance and availability and condition guidance for the details that affect your order.
3. Kobo: ebooks for Kobo devices and supported apps
Kobo is a natural comparison if you already read on a Kobo device or use its reading apps. Start with the exact title and your genuine billing country. A book visible in another country’s catalogue may not be available to your account.
Our 🔵 Kobo US shopping link — affiliate link is labelled for US readers. Readers elsewhere should select their appropriate country and verify availability. Purchases can be read through supported Kobo products; exporting a protected file to another manufacturer’s device may require additional software and compatible DRM. Do not assume a Kobo purchase transfers to Kindle.
4. eBooks.com: compare format before buying
eBooks.com is another place to compare digital editions. Check the title’s format, protection and supported reading method before paying. For a Kindle, the important distinction is whether the specific purchase is DRM-free or otherwise supported; an ordinary Adobe DRM-protected EPUB cannot simply be copied to an e-ink Kindle.
📱 Explore eBooks.com — affiliate link. Read its Kindle compatibility guidance first if you use a Kindle. A suitable reading app may be a better route than changing your existing device.
5. Google Play Books: a digital-store comparison
Google Play Books is worth comparing when you read on a phone, tablet or computer and prefer buying individual titles. Check that the book is available for your account and that its reading options fit the device you intend to use. Export permissions and protection vary by book; a purchase is not a promise of an unrestricted EPUB file.
Open Google Play Books — non-affiliate link. Google’s export instructions explain the formats and permissions to check before using another reader.
How to choose without opening five baskets
- Buying a print gift in the US or UK? Start with the appropriate Bookshop.org storefront.
- Comparing a particular used edition? Start with Alibris and read the seller’s condition notes.
- Already using Kobo? Check your local Kobo catalogue first.
- Comparing an ebook across stores? Confirm format, DRM and device support before price.
- Buying from Singapore or Malaysia? Verify country eligibility or actual delivery rather than relying on a US listing.
For legal free options, see our free ebooks guide. For a new device, use our Kindle and Kobo guides. For any paid purchase, compare the same edition and final total; there is no single store that is best for every reader.
