You have the reader and a book you cannot put down. Then the little things get in the way: a slippery grip, nowhere to prop the screen, or a cable that has vanished into another bag.

These ten essentials are worth considering because they solve familiar problems. You do not need to buy all ten. Start with protection, use the charging cable you already have, then choose the extra that would make your own reading time easier.

1. A fitted cover that protects the screen

Your e-reader may live in your hand, but it also spends time beside keys and cables in your bag. A cover with a front flap is a sensible first purchase if you carry it out regularly.

Kindle option: the pictured MoKo rotating stand case is listed for the 7-inch Paperwhite 12th generation (2024). Check the full model name and selected variant. It is not a universal Kindle cover.

Kobo options: the Clara Colour/BW SleepCover fits those two models only. Libra Colour owners need the separate Libra Colour SleepCover. Both provide sleep/wake and a folding stand. [1,2]

Clara Colour / Clara BW:

Libra Colour:

Identify your reader in its settings before choosing a colour. Clara 2E, Libra 2 and older Paperwhites need their own cases.

2. A padded sleeve for journeys

A sleeve is useful when your reader shares a backpack with other belongings. It also lets you remove a bulky cover while reading, then put the device away afterwards.

Option to compare: the Aplufine large book sleeve in our existing accessories selection. It is designed for books, so it may be roomier than a dedicated Kindle or Kobo pouch. Choose a smaller, device-sized sleeve if you prefer a snug fit.

Fit check: compare usable internal dimensions with the reader and its fitted case. Look for padding and a secure closure. A fabric sleeve does not guarantee protection from crushing or water.

3. A comfortable hand strap or grip

If you keep shifting your fingers during a long chapter, a grip may be your most useful upgrade. A wraparound strap helps your hand support the reader without constantly pinching its edges.

Option to compare: Strapsicle silicone straps for Kindle and Kobo. The brand has a device-specific fit guide: choose by exact model rather than guessing from screen size. [3]

Check the fit with your existing case and make sure straps leave the power button, USB port and page buttons clear. A grip helps with holding; it does not replace a front cover in a bag.

Find your model in the official Strapsicle fit guide β†’

4. An adjustable stand for a desk or table

A stand gives your Kindle or Kobo a regular place beside your breakfast, keyboard or favourite chair. Choose a viewing angle that suits the way you sit.

Option to compare: the wishacc adjustable bamboo book stand. Its larger surface is useful if you also read paperbacks or cookbooks. A compact tablet stand may suit a small bedside table better.

Fit check: the ledge should support your reader without covering text, buttons or the charging port. Page clips intended for paper books should not press against the e-reader screen.

5. A flexible holder for reading in bed

A flexible arm can bring the page closer when your bedside table is too low or too far away. Paired with a remote, it lets your hands rest while the story carries on.

Option to compare: the Lamicall LS02 gooseneck holder. Its manufacturer notes that the flexible design can wobble when you tap the screen. That makes it better suited to reading than frequent typing or handwriting. [4]

Measure the mounting surface and compare the holder’s clamping range with your reader, including its case. Position it securely without squeezing the screen or blocking buttons.

Choose by reading position: a desk stand and flexible holder are alternatives. Most readers will not need both.

6. A page turner matched to your reader

Black official Kobo Remote
Official Kobo Remote. A different product from the clip-on remote.

Some nights, the nicest accessory is the one that lets you turn a page without moving from your comfortable spot.

Kindle option: the SK SYUKUYU page turner uses a clip-on receiver that touches the screen. Check the exact supported reader, case clearance and page-direction controls. Do not assume it pairs through Kindle Bluetooth.

Kobo option: Kobo Remote pairs over Bluetooth and turns pages forward and backward without a screen clip. Kobo lists Clara 2E, Clara BW, Clara Colour, Libra 2, Libra Colour, Sage, Elipsa and Elipsa 2E as compatible. It uses a replaceable AAA battery. It is not a Kindle remote. [5]

For Kindle Click and clip-on alternatives, see our Kindle page-turner comparison and confirm the current supported model list before ordering.

7. The right spare charging and data cable

A spare cable is easy to overlook until your usual one is at home. Match the reader’s actual connection: USB-C for many newer models, Micro-USB for some older Kindles and Kobos.

Option to compare: a UGREEN USB-A to USB-C braided cable with data transfer, such as the 60481 family. USB-A connects to a traditional charger or computer port; it will not plug directly into a USB-C-only charger. [6]

For transferring supported files, check that the listing says data transfer, not just charging. If the supplied cable works and you always have it with you, a spare can wait.

8. A portable charger for longer trips

A power bank earns its place on longer journeys, especially when it can recharge your phone too. It is less urgent if you read at home and already charge your reader regularly.

Option to compare: the Anker Nano A1259, a 10,000mAh power bank with a built-in USB-C cable and USB-C/USB-A ports. Its advertised 30W maximum does not mean your reader will charge at 30W; the reader determines what it accepts. [7]

Match the connector and charging requirements to your device. Older Micro-USB readers need a suitable separate cable. Check model A1259 so you do not accidentally compare a different Nano product.

9. A soft microfibre cleaning cloth

A fingerprint-free screen is a small pleasure that makes the page feel clearer. A soft cloth can also be useful for glasses and other screens.

Option to compare: MagicFiber microfibre cloths; the photograph shows the six-pack. Keep one cloth clean and separate for your reader. A suitable cloth you already own may be enough. [8]

Follow your device maker’s cleaning instructions. Kobo advises unplugging the reader before cleaning and keeping moisture away from openings. Avoid spraying liquid directly onto the device. [9]

10. A place to keep reading notes

Black Kobo Stylus 2

Sometimes a sentence deserves more than a highlight. Notes help you remember why a book mattered, save a recommendation or collect questions for your book club.

For supported Kobo owners: Kobo Stylus 2 works with Libra Colour, Sage, Elipsa and Elipsa 2E. It is not compatible with Clara Colour/BW or Kindle. Check whether your bundle already includes one. [10]

For Kindle and other Kobo readers: built-in highlights and notes are a free starting point. If you prefer paper, The Book Lover’s Journal by Peter Pauper Press gives you a reading record away from the screen. Standard Kindles and Paperwhites do not gain handwriting support with a generic stylus; Kindle Scribe needs its own compatible pen.

Preview the interior layout, then compare edition, condition, availability and delivered total.

Which should you choose first?

For commuting: start with a fitted cover or correctly sized sleeve. For evenings in bed: consider a secure holder and compatible remote. For book-club notes: try built-in highlights, then choose a journal or supported stylus if you need more.

Once you have found the accessory that solves your problem, open your preferred store, confirm the exact model or edition and compare the delivered total. One upgrade you use every day is more valuable than a drawer full of extras.
