Good books. Better reading decisions.
A Kindle can be a lovely gift: a small invitation to put the phone down and disappear into a story.
But someone who reads on their phone may value a light bag more than a premium finish.
Before choosing a model, ask what would make reading easier for that particular person.

Our short answer: buy for the reading habit
Choose a compact Kindle when portability and ordinary text books are the priority. Compare a Paperwhite when the recipient values adjustable warm lighting for longer reading sessions.
Match the exact release and available features on the listing before buying.
Skip the device for now if the recipient barely reads, prefers a phone, or mainly uses a book app that the device does not support.
Let them try a book sample on their existing device first.
Start with the reader, then one accessory. A model-specific cover is a sensible first extra for travel. A stand or remote is optional; buy one only when it solves a real problem.
Before checkout, confirm the exact model and release year, recipient’s bookstore, total price, delivery date and return terms. Do not assume an older case fits a new release.

Start with three quiet questions
Do they already buy Kindle books? Do they read novels or illustrated books?
Would they carry a reader to work or mostly use it at home?
Those answers matter more than guessing their favourite colour. If their books are in another app, check access before choosing an Amazon device.
Match the gift to the reader
For text-led novels and a smaller bag, start by comparing the compact Kindle.
For someone who enjoys longer sessions and wants an adjustable warm light, compare the Paperwhite.
Colour deserves a look when illustrated pages are central to the reading habit; it adds less to a novel made mainly of text.
These are buying criteria, not claims from our own hands-on testing.
Check the release year before adding a cover
Amazon announced a redesigned Kindle family on 1 October 2026.
A familiar product name can now refer to different hardware, so check the release year and exact case compatibility.
A previous-release device may still make a thoughtful gift, but its accessories need to match that device—not the newest photograph in a search result.
A complete gift does not need a trolley full of extras
Start with the reader and one well-fitting protective cover. Add a stand only if they prefer reading at a desk.
Compare the compact Kindle listings on Amazon US and Paperwhite listings on Amazon US, then choose the exact release before browsing cases.

Give them a way to choose their first book
Ask for a favourite author, then let them sample a book before buying it.
If they read on a phone or tablet and prefer a different store, browse eBooks.com as another option; check format and DRM compatibility first.
A DRM-protected eBooks.com purchase should not be assumed to work on an E Ink Kindle.
The five-minute gift check
Write down the recipient’s book store, preferred reading size, exact device release, matching cover and total checkout cost.
Check delivery and returns before paying. Bookmark this checklist for your next bookish birthday, and tell us: would your gift recipient choose a smaller reader or a bigger page?
Before you order a Kindle Christmas gift
Check the recipient’s books first. Ask which store or reading app they use and whether they want a dedicated device. Compare the Kindle options linked above only after confirming the fit.
Match the cover to the exact release. Save the device model and year, then follow our Kindle case compatibility guide. Do not buy a fitted cover based only on a photograph.
Keep the extras useful. Choose one compatible cover first. If the recipient already has a reader, compare our reading accessories and smaller bookish gifts instead of buying another device.
Ready to choose the gift? Once the recipient’s book store, exact device and matching cover are confirmed, check the delivered total, arrival estimate, gift receipt options and return deadline.
If the complete setup fits your budget and their reading habits, choose that model and finish checkout.
