If you already pay for Amazon Prime, there is a small reading library waiting inside your membership. Kindle Unlimited opens a larger one, but it is a separate subscription. Which door should you open first? The answer depends less on how many books you read and more on whether the books you actually want are behind it.
The quick answer
- Already have Prime and read occasionally? Browse Prime Reading first. It is included in an eligible Prime membership and its selection rotates.
- Read widely or often? Check Kindle Unlimited for the books on your list. It has a broader eligible catalogue, but Prime membership does not include it.
- Want one particular bestseller? Search that title in both libraries before subscribing. Neither membership promises every Kindle book.
Both are borrowing programmes: a title you borrow through a membership is different from a Kindle ebook you buy and keep in your library. You can read eligible titles using a Kindle device or the Kindle reading app; you do not need to buy a new e-reader just to try the service.

Amazon currently says Kindle Unlimited lets members borrow up to 20 eligible titles at once, with no due dates; the UK Prime Reading help page says up to 10 Prime Reading titles can be borrowed at once. These limits and catalogues can change, so check the current terms in your own marketplace.
Try the three-book test before you subscribe
Open your reading list and choose three books you would be genuinely pleased to start this month: perhaps a familiar author, a new genre, and the book you keep meaning to read. Search each title on Amazon while signed into the US or UK account you actually use. Look for the precise Prime Reading or Kindle Unlimited borrowing option on the book page. A Kindle edition existing on Amazon does not mean it is included in either library.
If Prime Reading offers a few appealing choices, enjoy those first. If Kindle Unlimited has several books you would start soon, compare the subscription price shown to your account with what you would otherwise spend on those books. If neither has your list, buy the individual ebooks you want instead. A membership is only useful when it meets your reading taste.
